John of Toledo

John of Toledo OCist (* in England; † July 13, 1275 in Lyon ) was an English Cistercian and cardinal.

Born in England, he studied medicine in Toledo and theology in an unknown place. He entered the Clairvaux monastery . He was abbot of Épau Abbey. With Emperor Friedrich II he came to a synod in Rome in 1241. He was two years prisoner together with Cistercian cardinal Giacomo de Pecorara. On May 28, 1244 he was appointed cardinal priest of San Lorenzo in Lucina and in 1262 he was appointed cardinal bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina . In 1245 he took part in the First Council of Lyon . He participated in the papal elections in 1254 , 1261 , 1264-1265 and 1268-1271 .

He was active at the papal curia for almost 60 years and was known as Cardinalis Albus, white cardinal, because of his white vestments.
