Johannes Church in Werl

The former Protestant Johanneskirche is a listed , secular church building in Werl in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Soest in Germany .

History and architecture

The Protestant Christians were a minority in Werl in the 19th century. The congregation used the monastery church and the chapel on the Gänsevöhde as a simultaneous church for their services . However, this led to an uproar in the Catholic population. During a tumult in the monastery church, the Protestant church equipment was stolen and carried through the city.

In order to forego the simultaneum , the Protestant community received 5000 thalers in 1851; However, this money was not enough to build a new church. The community had a barn on Steinerstraße bought in 1854 converted into a church service house according to plans by the building inspector Hessenkamp from Soest : The south side of the massive building became a church wing in a neo-Gothic design, with an entrance portal on the south gable side. The north side was converted into a parish apartment. A wooden bell tower requested by the community could not be realized. But above the south gable, a massive, Gothic turret composed of stone was built - by the government. The church and apartment were completed in 1860.

In December 1868 a storm destroyed the church tower, which fell on the church roof. The municipal council decided to erect a ridge turret in the middle of the building, in which two bells should be hung. In March 1872, the Prussian king approved the free provision of 15 hundredweight gun bronze from French booty cannons for casting these bells. The new bells stood unused in the church for years, and in 1882 there was still no roof turret. The city of Werl and the district administration in Soest pushed for a tower to be built. The architect Sültenfuß provided the design for a real church tower . At the urging of the building inspection in Soest, the plans had to be revised so that this would now be a massive church tower that should be accessible via a gallery to be built into the building . Government building council Westphal made a new blueprint for a tower in the neo-Gothic overall look of the church; for this purpose, the government in Arnsberg presented the consistory in Münster with a construction plan by the building inspector Arnecke.

After the decision to erect the new tower on July 24, 1885, the narrow tower under a pointed helmet was completed and inaugurated in 1886 under the direction of master builder Westphal.

Until 1953 the church had a harmonium , but it was replaced by an organ built by the Stockmann company . Since the completion of the new evangelical Pauluskirche in 1966, the church building initially served as a community center, and since then as an event space after it was deedicated. An Italian restaurant has also established itself there.

The altar with a painting of the risen Christ was dismantled after the profanation, the image of Christ was then taken to the House of Encounter in Werl.
