The natural harbor served as an anchorage for the Norwegian seal hunter MV Norsel under Captain Olav Johannessen (* 1917), who gave it its name, in 1955 . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out surveys that same year. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1957.
