Johanniswiese

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Johanniswiese , called Jowiese for short , is the open-air and lido of the city of Hildesheim .

location

The outdoor pool is located in the Stadtmitte / Neustadt district on Lucienvörder Allee between Innerste and the Innerste overflow basin.

history

As early as the 19th century there were numerous river bathing establishments on the Innerste, starting at the Kuhbrücke near the Marienburg domain , at the Dreibogenbrücke , on the grounds of the Concordia sports club , near today's Hohnsenbrücke ( Wilhelm-Murke-Freibad ) and down the river in Himmelsthür . Nevertheless, at the end of the century there were already complaints about the lack of a proper municipal outdoor swimming pool. Even before the First World War , the plan for an “electricity-free” (i.e. not in the river) outdoor swimming pool was drawn up, but could not be implemented during the war years. In 1919 the city decided to build the bathing establishment in the floodplain of the Innerste, on the Johanniswiese. The pool should have separate pools for women and men and be suitable for competitions. In order to make the system flood-proof, the excavation of the basins should be used to raise the terrain. The outdoor pool was completed in 1922. Around the main basin there were grouped houses belonging to the local water sports clubs, which received a significant boost from the new facility.

After the end of the Second World War , the British occupation forces requisitioned the swimming pool. It was not open to the public again until the summer of 1950.

After the creation of the Hohnsensee in the south, the complex was given an approximately 150 meter long sandy beach in 1974. After it was briefly used as a temporary indoor swimming pool by means of an air dome, the almost 70-year-old facility was completely renovated in 1989, during which the old pools were filled in. Since then, there has been a lawn between the club houses. In 1998 the pool was leased to a private operator who, in the winter of 1999, opened an ice rink in the open-air pool against considerable resistance from residents. As early as 2001 he had to file for bankruptcy after the city terminated his contract due to unfulfilled payment obligations. In 2002 a new operator took over the facility.

Today the outdoor pool covers an area of around five hectares, the total water area of the pools is 2,700 square meters.

In addition to the beach part of the Hohnsen, the outdoor pool has the following pools:
