The Hohnsensee is a 500 m long, 250 m wide and 9.5 ha large swimming lake in Hildesheim .

The Hohnsensee is located south of the Neustadt between the street Hohnsen, the Innerste , the Johanniswiese outdoor pool and the overflow basin of the Innerste. It was created from gravel mining from 1966 to 1974 and was named after the desert village of Hohnsen .

According to the decision of the City Council of Hildesheim on November 22, 1965, the water was intended as a local recreation area from the beginning , after the gravel mining ended, the area was redesigned like a park and released for public use. As a lido with a 150 m long sandy beach, the northern part is part of the open-air pool and is therefore subject to a charge, while the rest of the part can be bathed free of charge at your own risk.

On June 29, 2008, children were baptized for the first time in Hohnsensee by the pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran parishes of St. Andreas , St. Lamberti and St. Michael .
