Life

Gustav Struckmann's father was Gustav Wilhelm Struckmann , counselor in Osnabrück. His younger brothers were the later President of the Higher Regional Court Johannes Struckmann in Cologne and the later Higher Regional Court Judge Hermann Struckmann in Kiel , who was also involved in the codification of the Civil Code .

In 1856 he passed the Abitur at the Ratsgymnasium in Osnabrück and then studied law at the universities of Heidelberg, Berlin and Göttingen. In line with his democratic-liberal attitude, he joined the Hannovera Göttingen fraternity in 1858 . In November 1859 he passed the auditor examination in Hanover. The subsequent training as an auditor (trainee lawyer), which was interrupted by a long trip to Italy, he performed at courts in Blumenthal, Coppenbrügge, Hameln and Hanover.

After he had passed the second state examination in law, he did not enter the civil service of the Kingdom of Hanover because of his political and ideological convictions, but instead settled as a lawyer in Osnabrück. In 1859 he was elected to the Hanover regional synod. He was also involved in local politics; In 1870 he was the mayor of Osnabrück. In addition, as a member of the National Liberal Party, he was a member of the German Reichstag, from 1874 to 1877 for the constituency of Hanover 4 (Osnabrück), and from 1884 to 1890 for the constituency of Hanover 10 (Hildesheim) in the Reichstag. In the Reichstag he mainly devoted himself to socio-political issues.

In 1875 he was elected mayor of the city of Hildesheim (from 1885 his title was mayor). He held this position for 34 years (he was represented by Hans Ukert in 1885/86); Re-election in 1896. The office meant that he was a member of a number of committees over the years, some of them still retired. In 1877 he took over the chairmanship of the Hildesheim children's preservation association. In 1880 he became a member of the Prussian manor house, and in 1882 he was elected a board member of the Hanover City Council. In the same year he became a full member of the Provincial Committee of the Prussian Province of Hanover . As a representative of the cities, he was a member of the permanent advisory board of the building trade department of the Prussian state trade office. In addition, he was a member of the Provincial Commission for Research and Conservation of Monuments in the Province of Hanover. In 1890 he took over the chairmanship of the German Association against the Abuse of Spiritual Drinks for 12 years. In 1903 he became a member of the German Association of Cities. From 1908 he was a member of the advisory board of the Central Office for People's Welfare. During the time when Gustav Stuckmann was mayor or lord mayor in Hildesheim, the city experienced a significant economic boom. During the resulting construction work, he made sure that the art monuments in the city were preserved and looked after.
