John A. O'Brien († before or in 1962) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and Mayor of Warwick , Rhode Island from 1935 to 1936 .

Life

On November 6, 1934, O'Brien was elected Mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island. During his tenure, which lasted from 1935 to 1936, he successfully campaigned for an amendment to the city's charter , which gave the mayor greater influence over the city police and the water board. The mayoral election on November 3, 1936 brought a close result and was overshadowed by allegations of fraud. The Republican candidate, Albert P. Ruerat , finally appealed to the Supreme Court of Rhode Island in December of that year . This resulted in O'Brien, who had originally been declared the winner, defeated Ruerat by a margin of 549 votes.
