John Baptiste Calkin

John Baptiste Calkin (born March 16, 1827 in London , † May 15, 1905 ) was an English composer , organist and music teacher .

Calkin was tutored by his father, the pianist, cellist and composer James Calkin , and then worked from 1846 to 1853 as the organist at St. Columba's College in Dublin . On his return to London he was organist at several churches and professor at the Guildhall School of Music and later at the Croydon Conservatory .

His best-known work is the setting of the popular Christmas carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow . He also composed church music, hymns and anthems .
