John Barrett (tennis player)

John Barrett (born April 17, 1931 in London ) is a retired English tennis player , author and sports journalist.

Life

Barrett was born in Mill Hill, London in 1931 . He attended University College School in Hampstead and then studied at St John's College , Cambridge.

Between 1950 and 1970 he competed regularly at the Wimbledon Championships , where he reached the third round several times. In 1956 he played a single game for the British Davis Cup team . In doubles with Roger Becker , he defeated the Chileans Luis Ayala and Andres Hammersley .

Barrett married Angela Mortimer , the 1961 Wimbledon champion , in April 1967 .

From 1963 Barrett worked as a tennis correspondent for the Financial Times . In 1971 he succeeded Dan Maskell as TV commentator for the BBC for the Wimbledon tournament and remained so until his retirement in 2006. He also published several books, including the official tennis yearbooks of the International Tennis Federation ( World of Tennis ) until 2001 .

Awards

On July 12, 2014, John Barrett was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame .
