John Bernard McDowell

John Bernard McDowell (born July 17, 1921 in New Castle , Pennsylvania , USA ; † February 25, 2010 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania, USA) was a Roman Catholic auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Pittsburgh .

Life

John Bernard McDowell received his theological training at St. Vincent College. He received his PhD in Education and Philosophy from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained a priest on November 4, 1945 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him titular bishop of Tamazuca in 1966 and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Diocese of Pittsburgh . The episcopal ordination donated him on September 8, 1966, the Bishop of Pittsburgh and later Cardinal Curia and Prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy , John Joseph Wright ; Co- consecrators were William Graham Connare , Bishop of Greensburg, and Vincent Martin Leonard , Auxiliary Bishop in Pittsburgh. In 1996 Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.

John Bernard McDowell was known for his commitment to education in the USA. He firmte more than 100,000 young people.

He wrote a biography of each of the seven bishops of the Pittsburgh diocese during his tenure; he published his own in 2007. In 1962 Duquesne University awarded him an honorary doctorate. He was a member of the Knights of Equity, Court 9 Pittsburgh .
