John Brewer Cameron

John Brewer Cameron (born December 31, 1843 in Kilmonivaig , Scotland , † 1897 ) was an Australian surveyor and explorer .

Life

John was born as the eldest of eight children to his parents Ewen (* 1813) and Mary (* 1821), née McTavish, in the Scottish community of Kilomonivaig. The family emigrated to Australia in 1853: they left Scotland on June 8th and reached Port Phillip on September 13th of the same year. Cameron went to school in Richmond , now a suburb of Melbourne , and Healesville . He later worked as a surveyor in Australia, Fiji and New Guinea .

From 1880 to 1882 Cameron worked for the "New South Wales Lands Department" on the border between New South Wales and Queensland.

Marking of the " Cameron Corner "

In honor of Cameron, " Cameron Corner " was named, the point in the Australian outback where the borders of the states of New South Wales , Queensland and South Australia meet ( coordinates: 29 ° 0 ′ 0 ″  S , 141 ° 0 ′ 0 ″  E ) , a triangle with respect to the states of Australia . Cameron set up a post at this point in September 1880, marking the end of this boundary line on the border of South Australia. Then he set up another post every mile to the east along the New South Wales-Queensland border. World icon
