John C. Coleman

John Christopher Coleman (born July 13, 1940 ) is a British psychologist , psychiatrist and university professor.

Coleman graduated from McGill University in Montreal . He then received his PhD from University College London in 1966 and completed his clinical internship at Middlesex Hospital . In 1989 he founded the research-based Trust for the Study of Adolescence . He was a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Education at Oxford University (2006–2015). He then became a visiting professor at the University of Bedfordshire . He worked at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel and directed Chalvington's youth psychiatry.

In 2001 he received the Order of the British Empire .

He is particularly interested in adolescence , for which he published the book The nature of adolescence in 1980 , which reached four editions. In it, he presented the focal model, according to which young people of different ages concentrate on certain, not clearly delineated problems. That put the previous level theory into perspective.

He publishes the series Adolescence and society and Understanding adolescence . He published the Journal of Adolescence from 1984-2000 .
