John Chancellor (journalist)
John William Chancellor (born July 14, 1927 in Chicago , Illinois , † July 12, 1996 in Princeton , New Jersey ) was an American journalist and television presenter .
Life
From 1956 to 1970 he was a correspondent for the television program The Huntley-Brinkley Report , which was hosted by Chet Huntley and David Brinkley . From 1961 to 1962 he was a television presenter on the television program The Today Show . Chancellor was the presenter of NBC Nightly News from 1970 to 1982 and continued to work as a commentator for the show in the years to 1993. In his career, Chancellor also served as an election evening rapporteur for the presidential election. The concept of coloring states won in 1976 in red or blue on a map of the US states, depending on the winner, goes back to him. His first marriage was to Connie Chancellor and his second marriage to Barbara Upshaw. Chancellor had three children.
In 1993, Chancellor was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The John Chancellor Award has been presented annually since 2004 by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (previously from 1995 by the Annenberg Public Policy Center).
