John Chichester, 4th Baronet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir John Chichester, 4th Baronet (before January 2, 1689 , † September 2, 1740 ) was a British nobleman and politician.

John Chichester came from a branch of the family Chichester , an old family of the gentry of Devon . He was the eldest son of Sir Arthur Chichester, 3rd Baronet and his wife Elizabeth Drewe . He was baptized on January 2, 1689.

After his father's death in early 1718, he inherited his possessions and the title of Baronet , of Raleigh in the County of Devon. Like his father, he supported the Tories politically and rejected the Hanoverian succession to the throne after the death of Queen Anne . In 1721 the Jacobites counted on his support in a revolt, and in 1722 he was in contact with Francis Atterbury's agents during the conspiracy . In the general election in 1734 he was elected unchallenged as MP for Barnstaple , where the Chichester family had significant political influence. However, it was of little importance in the House of Commons during the Whig government .

Chichester's first marriage was around 1718, Anne Leigh , daughter of John Leigh of Newport . With her he had two sons and five daughters, including:

  • Sir John Chichester, 5th Baronet (1721–1784)
  • William Chichester (around 1722-1770)
  • Catherine Chichester ⚭ George Musgrave of Nettlecombe

After her death in July 1723 he married Frances , the widow of Francis Hall of Crediton , daughter of Andrew Quicke of Newton St Cyres in Devon, in 1733. This marriage remained childless. Chichester was buried in Sherwell, Devon. His heir became his eldest son, John.
