John Robert Coghlan (born September 19, 1946 in Dulwich , London ) is an English drummer .

Coghlan joined the band The Specters , founded by Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in 1962 , which received their first recording contract in 1965. After several unsuccessful singles, the band took on Rick Parfitt as a further member and changed the name to Status Quo . Shortly thereafter, they made their breakthrough with Pictures of Matchstick Men . In the 1970s, John Coghlan enjoyed great success with the band. At the end of the 1970s, however, tensions in the band made themselves felt.

At that time, Coghlan founded the Diesel Band, which despite its well-known members (e.g. Andy Bown , Mick Moody and Bob Young ) was a hobby. John Coghlan stayed with Status Quo until 1981, when he left the recordings for the album 1 + 9 + 8 + 2 .

As a result, he continued to play with the Diesel Band, which due to the contractual obligations of the various members did not have their own record deal. Of the partners in crime , with whom he played from 1985, there were publications, but these were unsuccessful. Recordings by his Diesel Band, which were made in Sweden around 1992, remained unreleased except for the single River of Tears .

In the years that followed, things grew quiet around Coghlan. It was not until around 2000 that it was increasingly noticed in public again. He currently plays in various bands, including the King Earl Boogie Band and the Status Quo tribute band "State of Quo", which also appears under the name "John Coghlan's Quo". He also released an album in 2002 with the Barrelhouse Brothers , founded by Noel Redding . He also performed with the former Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor . A joint recording from 2001 was released in 2007 under the title Little Red Rooster .

In March 2013 he took part in a Status Quo reunion tour and appeared again for the first time with Rossi, Parfitt and Lancaster. Recordings of the tour were released under the title "Back2SQ.1 - The Frantic Four Reunion 2013" in several formats (vinyl, CD, DVD and BluRay).

In March and April 2014 the original line-up of Status Quo, known as the "Frantic Four", followed suit. The concert recording from Dublin's O 2 Arena was released in October 2014 in several formats (vinyl, CD, DVD and BluRay).
