John Cook (born January 25, 1972 ) is an Australian cognitive scientist . He gained notoriety through founding the Skeptical Science website and through scientific work to quantify the scientific consensus on man-made global warming .

Professional background

Cook acquired at the age of 20 years a university degree in Physics ( Bachelor of Science ) at the University of Queensland in Australia. The following years were marked by various positions in the private sector as a programmer, illustrator and graphic designer. In 2016 he did his doctorate at the School of Psychology at the University of Western Australia in the subject of Cognitive Psychology ( Doctor of Philosophy ) with the thesis "Closing the 'consensus gap' by communicating the scientific consensus on climate change and countering misinformation" (German: Das Closing the “consensus gap” by communicating the scientific consensus on climate change and countering misinformation). He is currently a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University .

Act

In addition to creating the Skeptical Science website , he is also the author of several books and co-author of several scientific publications. His work Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature was scientifically cited more than 1000 times by July 2019 and cited by then US President Barack Obama as evidence of the consensus in science on the topic of global warming. This work was honored as best paper in 2013 by the journal Environmental Research Letters .

In July 2019, this study exceeded downloads more than a million times, making it the most downloaded paper of all of IOP Publishing's 80+ scientific journals, according to the authors .

Together with the team of Skeptical Science, he received the from in 2011 Australian Museum awarded Eureka Prize for his efforts to explain climate change and to spread the knowledge about it.
