John D. Anderson

John D. Anderson Jr. (Born October 1, 1937 in Lancaster , Pennsylvania ) is an American engineer .

He graduated from the University of Florida and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering. From 1959 to 1962 he worked at the Aerospace Research Laboratory / Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as a scientist with the rank of lieutenant . From 1962 to 1966 he attended Ohio State University and earned a Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering.

He then joined the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in 1966 and headed the supersonic group . In 1980, he was appointed to a professorship in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland . 1986–1987 he held the Charles Lindbergh Chair at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum . In addition to his professorship, he became a member of the Committee for the History and Philosophy in Science in 1993 and a member of the History Faculty of the University of Maryland in 1996.

He retired in 1999, although he remains associated with the University of Maryland as Professor Emeritus.

He is currently the curator of aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum , Smithsonian Institution .
