John De Hart

John De Hart (born July 25, 1727 in Elizabethtown , Province of New Jersey , †  June 1, 1795 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1774 and 1775 he was a delegate for New Jersey to the Continental Congress .

Career

Nothing is known about John De Hart's youth and schooling. Not much is known about his life before 1770 either. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1770, he began to work in this profession. In the 1770s he supported some of the American colonists' claims against the British Crown , but opposed secession. In 1774 he was a signatory to the Articles of Association . Then he was a member of the Continental Congress until 1775. He resigned this mandate after it became clear that the trend was towards American independence from Great Britain. Nevertheless, De Hart continued to work on the political formation of his state. In 1776 he was a draftsman for the New Jersey constitution. Between June 1776 and February 1777 he served as Chief Justice Chairman of the New Jersey Supreme Court . He was Mayor of Elizabethtown from 1789 until his death. He died on June 1, 1795.
