John Dollard

John S. Dollard (born August 29, 1900 in Menasha , Wisconsin , † October 8, 1980 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American psychologist and social scientist. He is known for his frustration-aggression hypothesis and his sociological research.

Life

Dollard studied commercial science and English at the University of Wisconsin . He then obtained his doctorate in sociology at the University of Michigan in Chicago in 1931. His PhD was supervised by WF Ogburn .

He was interested in psychoanalysis and therefore traveled to Germany to train as a psychoanalyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute in Berlin. His training analyst was Hanns Sachs .

After this training, Dollard returned to the United States to work at Yale University . There he worked at the Institute of Human Relations and taught sociology, anthropology and psychology. He became a student of the behaviorist Clark L. Hull .

In 1951, Dollard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1969 he retired.

Dollard led u. a. 1937 carried out an analysis of the social structure of a city in the southern states. At the time, this was considered courageous - this is how the publication of this study was u. a. in the State of Georgia banned in response.

Today, Dollard is known in relation to the frustration-aggression theory as a member of the so-called Yale group (together with Leonhard W. Doob , Neal E. Miller , Robert R. Sears and OH Mowrer ), which was published in 1939. The members of the Yale group tried to combine psychoanalytic and behaviorist concepts.

Furthermore, his research interests extended to the areas of social learning, psychotherapy research and personality.
