John Edward Hasse

John Edward Hasse (born November 20, 1948 ) is an American jazz writer, jazz pianist and musicologist.

Hasse studied at Carleton College (Bachelor 1971) and Indiana University (Master 1975), where he received his doctorate in 1981. He also holds a degree in business administration from Wharton School (1981). He is the author of an authoritative biography on Duke Ellington and is a curator at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History in Washington, DC , where he was responsible for acquiring the estate of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald in 1988 and organizing traveling exhibitions on both. He is the founder of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He also studied New Orleans jazz and American folk music.

He received two Deems Taylor Awards from ASCAP for his jazz books (1982, 1986), and his publication of Hoagy Carmichael recordings was nominated for two Grammys in 1989. Hasse is an honorary doctorate from Walsh University.
