John S. Edwards (born October 6, 1943 in Roanoke , Virginia ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He has been a Senator in the Virginia Senate since 1996, representing the 21st District.

Life

Edwards attended Patrick Henry High School . After graduating from school in 1962, he studied at Princeton University , where he received a Bachelor of Arts cum laude in 1966 . From 1966 to 1967 he attended the Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York through a Rockefeller Brothers Theological Fellowship . He then studied at the Law School of the University of Virginia and received in 1970 his Juris Doctor .

In the early 1970s, Edwards served in the U.S. Marine Corps as an officer with the rank of captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps . He then practiced as a lawyer in Washington, DC and was a volunteer on the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights under Law . In 1976 he returned to Roanoke. In 1980, he was named Attorney General of the Western District of Virginia by President Jimmy Carter .

His political career began in November 1993 when he was made a member of Roanoke City Council due to a vacant seat . In 1994 he was elected to this function for a four-year term. At the same time he became the city's vice mayor. In 1995 Edwards ran for a seat in the Virginia Senate and was able to remove his seat from the Republican incumbent. He was re-elected in 1999 and 2003. Edwards has represented the 21st District as Senator since 1996.

Edwards is married with three children.
