John Ernst Matzke
John Ernst Matzke (born October 20, 1862 in Breslau ; † September 18, 1910 in Mexico City ) was an American Romanist and Medievalist of German origin.
life and work
Matzke came to the United States when he was 15. He received his doctorate in 1888 from Johns Hopkins University with the work Dialectical peculiarities in the development of the mouillierte L in Old French (Paris 1890 and in: Publications of the Modern language association 5, 1890, pp. 52-107) and taught from 1889 to 1892 successively at Bowdoin College , Indiana University Bloomington, and Johns Hopkins University. From 1893 until his untimely death (on the occasion of the re-establishment of the National Autonomous University of Mexico ) he was Professor of Romance Studies at Stanford University . From 1908 to 1909 Matzke was President of the Philological Association of the Pacific Coast.
