John Fleming (politician, 1847)

Sir John Fleming JP DL ( 1847 - February 25, 1925 ) was a Scottish politician.

Life

John Fleming in 1847, the son of from Dundee originating John Fleming born. In 1870 he married Elizabeth Dow . Fleming holds a doctorate in law and has served as both Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeen . He was also Lord Provost of Aberdeen between 1898 and 1902 . 1908 Fleming was beaten to the Knight Bachelor .

Political career

After James Bryce , who had held the Aberdeen South constituency mandate for the Liberal Party since 1885 , was appointed Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the United States in 1907 and consequently resigned his mandate, by-elections were required in the Aberdeen South constituency. Fleming was one of the potential candidates for the Liberal Party, but was overtaken by George Birnie Esslemont , who also won the mandate. After Esslemont resigned in 1917, by-elections were necessary in the constituency of Aberdeen South, to which Fleming ran. Fleming won the mandate with a clear lead over two non-party opponents and moved into the lower house . In the next general election in 1918 , Fleming lost 43.3% of his votes, thus losing his mandate to the unionist Frederick Thomson and leaving parliament.
