John Graham Wilmot Henderson

John Graham Wilmot Henderson (* 1948 ) is a British Latinist , Professor of Classical Philology at Cambridge University and Fellow of King's College , Cambridge .

After earning an MA and a DPhil , Henderson was first Assistant Lecturer (1975–1978), then Lecturer (1978–1996) and Reader in Latin Literature (1996–2003) at Cambridge University. In 2003 he was given a personal professorship for Classical Philology there.

Henderson works both on Latin prose writers of antiquity ( Phaedrus , Pliny the Elder , Seneca ) and the Middle Ages ( Isidore of Seville ) as well as on Latin poetry, in particular on the Comedy of Plautus and the satire of Juvenal , on the relationship between art and literature in the ancient world Rome and the history of reception. Together with Mary Beard , he has written an introduction to classical studies, which has also been translated into German, and a presentation of the reception of Greek art in Rome. In his younger years he has also dealt with the history of classical philology in the form of commentary on classics in the Oxford Classical Commentaries , particularly the Cicero and Virgil commentaries by Roland Gregory Austin .
