Life

Guerin grew up in San Diego and taught himself to play the drums at a young age by rhythmically accompanying his father's big band albums. As a teenager he played in several bands, including Don Sleet and Mike Wofford . In 1960 he became a member of the Buddy DeFranco Quartet and later played with the jazz pianist George Shearing .

Since the late 1960s, Guerin hired himself as a session musician in Hollywood. He was involved in the recording of hundreds of albums, film and television music.

In 1973 he founded the group LA Express with saxophonist Tom Scott and guitarist Robben Ford , with which he successfully released four albums by 1976. With his band he accompanied Joni Mitchell and recorded with her the successful album Court and Spark as well as four other albums. At the time, he was in a relationship with Mitchell that led to their engagement.

During the last years of his life, Guerin worked with Oscar Peterson and various other jazz musicians.

John Guerin was known for capturing the essence of a piece and giving it the perfect rhythmic foundation. Phil Hood lifts in Drum! pointed out that Guerin had a special gift for endorsing a piece by adding "mysteriousness and clarity" to what turned ordinary recordings into pop masterpieces.
