Trash is the 18th studio album by US rock musician Alice Cooper . It was released on Epic Records in July 1989 . It is best known for the hit single Poison , a collaboration between Cooper and sought-after US producer Desmond Child, who was responsible for the production of the entire album.

background

The album has been described as "tamer than its predecessor" Constrictor , Alice Cooper's comeback after a rather unsuccessful period in the early 1980s , and Raise Your Fist and Yell and mostly contains polished, catchy hard rock songs. Two of them, Only My Heart Talkin ' , in which Steven Tyler of Aerosmith sing along and Hell Is Living Without You are ballads. Numerous guest musicians from the hard rock sector are also involved, including almost the entire band Aerosmith, Kip Winger , and Jon Bon Jovi , who can be heard on the title track. Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi and Steve Lukather play guitar solos in Hell Is Living Without You .

The album was produced by Bon Jovi producer Desmond Child , who also co-wrote most of the songs. Other guest musicians were also involved in the songwriting , such as Joan Jett for House of Fire or Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora for Hell Is Living Without You. Four singles were released, after Poison these were Bed of Nails in 1989 , House of Fire and Only My Heart Talkin 'in 1990 , all of which achieved some presence on music television. The home video Alice Cooper Trashes the World was filmed on the ensuing year-long tour . During the tour Al Pitrelli (later with Savatage and Megadeth ) played guitar, which can be seen in the video.

The album title is taken from the song of the same name, it is about a woman who is described as a “high class tramp”, as an “upper-class bitch”, but as soon as she touches the “sheets” she turns into “trash ", Translated as" trash "or" rabble ", transformed. During the tour, word games such as “trashes the world” (for example “garbage the world too”) were played with the title.

reception

The album is one of Cooper's greatest successes. It was the most successful album for him since the 1970s, especially with the single Poison , which reached the top 10 of the charts in many countries, including number 7 in the USA. The album rose to number two in the UK and number 20 in the US , where it went platinum.

The reviews were mostly positive for Cooper. On allmusic .com, for example, Alex Henderson wrote that Trash had temporarily given Alice Cooper the visibility it deserved. "Shock-Rock" was not to be heard, however, the record was aimed more at the Mötley Crüe / Guns-N'-Roses audience. The rating was four out of five stars. At the time, Götz Kühnemund from Rock Hard only won over the album after it had "got used to it". He saw the songs as "prime examples of good hard rock", despite the partial reference to Bon Jovi. He awarded 8.5 out of ten points.
