John Haig (entrepreneur)
John Haig (born October 24, 1802 , † March 20, 1878 ) was a British entrepreneur and founder of the well-known whiskey brand Haig .
He came from a noble Scottish family, the Clan Haig . He was the son of William Haig (1771-1847), profoss of the University of St Andrews , from his marriage to Janet Stein.
Many of his ancestors and relatives, both on his father's and his mother's side, already operated whiskey distilleries. He founded the Cameronbridge whiskey distillery and John Haig & Co Ltd in 1924 .
In 1865 he was a founding member of the Scotch Distillers Association , an association of grain whiskey producers that later became the Distiller Company Ltd (DCL), whose members controlled 75% of grain whiskey production in 1877. After his death, his company was gradually taken over by DCL until 1919. Today the distillery belongs to the Diageo group.
In 1839 he married Rachel Mackerras Veitch († 1879). With her he had at least five sons and three daughters. One of his younger sons was the British Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig (1861-1928).
