The John Hancock Life Insurance Company is a US insurer based in Boston , Massachusetts . The company has been part of the Canadian insurance and financial services group Manulife Financial since 2003 .
History and background
In 1862 the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company was approved by Governor John Albion Andrew . The name was chosen by one of the Founding Fathers of the United States , the third president of the Continental Congress and first signatory of the Declaration of Independence, John Hancock , whose name was associated with dedication and integrity. In the following years, the name of the company varied in part, which grew to become one of the largest life insurance and pension companies in the United States and which also expanded into Canada. 2000, the former walked insurance company 's legal form and went as a public company on the stock exchange . In 2003 the group was taken over by the Canadian competitor Manulife, the takeover was completed in April 2004 with the delisting from the New York Stock Exchange . In this context, the Canadian subsidiary Maritime Life , based in Halifax, was merged with the Canadian insurance subsidiary of the Manulife Group.
John Hancock is traditionally based in the Boston neighborhood of Back Bay . From 1922 the company was based in Clarendon Street, in 1947 it moved to Berkely Street . From 1971 a skyscraper was built in the street as the new company headquarters, which was moved into five years later. Upon completion, the high-rise replaced the Prudential Tower as the tallest building in the city. The building served as company headquarters until July 2015, so the building, now officially known as the 200 Clarendon , continues to be known as the John Hancock Tower .
In the fall of 2018, John Hancock made international headlines when new life insurance policies were only offered in conjunction with fitness tracking. The insurer had already entered into an exclusive partnership with Vitality in this regard three years earlier .
