John Harley , also known as Juan Harley , (born May 5, 1886 in Glasgow , Scotland , † 1959 or May 15, 1960 ) was a Uruguayan football player and coach.

Player career

society

The Harley called "Yoni" emigrated from Scotland to Argentina in 1906. First he worked on the railroad in Bahía Blanca and then moved to Rosario de Santa Fe . Via Buenos Aires , where he was employed by the railway company Ferrocarril Oeste in 1908 and played for the team of the same name Ferrocarril Oeste and on October 15, 1908 in a friendly game that was lost 5-0 in Caballito / Buenos Aires against the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC) stood on the square, his way finally led to Montevideo. In 1909 he joined the predecessor of Club Atlético Peñarol , the CURCC. At that time, the native Scot was working in the workshops of Peñarol as a draftsman for Ferrocarril Central . He was employed there for a total of 37 years. For the CURCC he played until 1911 and again in 1913. Then he was active until 1919 for Peñarol. From 1909 to 1916 he was team captain. In 1920, Harley, suffering from myopia, ended his career. He acted with the Aurinegros in the role of the central half and belonged to the tribe formation throughout. Only in 1916 did he share the working hours with Juan Delgado . His teammate José Piendibene described Harley in 1951 as the best central half that has ever existed. With the CURCC he won the Uruguayan championship in 1911. He also secured the title in the Primera División in 1918 with Peñarol .

National team

Harley was a member of the Uruguayan senior team . From his debut on September 19, 1909 to his last appearance on October 1, 1916, he completed 17 international matches, according to the RSSSF . He did not score an international goal. He took with Celeste at the Copa Centenario Revolución de Mayo designated World Grand Prix 1910 in part. In 1913 and 1915 he won the Copa Newton with the national team . He was also used in three other unofficial international matches on April 30, 1911, February 25, 1912 and September 28, 1913, each against Argentina.
