Paltadacho Munis ( Konkani : पलतडचो मनीस palataḍaco manīs ; English title: The Man Beyond the Bridge ) is an Indian feature film by Laxmikant Shetgaonkar from 2009.

action

The young widower Vinayak has lived and worked for 15 years as a forest guard in a state-owned rubber-managed forest, the tree population of which is already badly thinned. A small river with a rope bridge separates the forest area from the next village, which he occasionally visits for shopping . Vinayak succeeds only moderately in deterring the local population from illegal forest use and logging, as they regard the forest area as their own. His superior forester has long been denying the transfer he wanted.

One night Vinayak notices a woman in the thicket in front of his house and chases her away. It is an outcast from the village, mentally confused and completely filthy. She now shows up at his house every evening and out of pity he gives her food. At first disgusted by her appearance, he soon begins to take care of the young woman, cleans her and takes her into his house.

During one of his rare shopping trips in the village, Vinayak learns that a local politician is donating the construction of a small temple at a place of prayer on a nearby mountain. The building of temples is accompanied by increased theft of wood, which Vinayak cannot prevent without his own rifle.

A relationship develops between Vinayak and the madwoman, which provokes the scorn of the villagers. For her safety, he locks her in the house during the day, but she can't take it and breaks out. When the woman becomes pregnant, this is no longer acceptable to the villagers. The local priest speaks to Vinayak in vain in the conscience to part with her. After the child is born, Vinayak also becomes an outcast. Religiously incited villagers storm his house and drive away his wife and child. She only returns the next night, and the following day Vinayak breaks the ropes of the suspension bridge that leads to the village.
