John Hickman (diplomat)

John Kyrle Hickman , CMG (born July 3, 1927 - February 23, 2001 ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to Ecuador from 1977 to 1981 and ambassador to Chile between 1982 and 1987 .

Life

John Kyrle Hickman, son of John Barlow Hickman and his wife Joan Hankinson, began after attending the Tonbridge School, founded in 1553, to study at Trinity Hall at the University of Cambridge , which he graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). After he made from 1948 to 1950 military service in the 45th Field Regiment Royal Artillery in the Commonwealth Brigade and was then 1,950 employees in the Ministry of War ( War Office ) , where he first Assistant Principal and 1955 Principal was. In 1958 he moved to the Ministry of Affairs for the Commonwealth of Nations (Commonwealth Relations Office) and was, among other things, First Secretary at the High Commission in New Zealand between 1959 and 1962 . In 1966 he finally moved into the diplomatic service (HM Diplomatic Service) Ministry of Foreign Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) . In the period that followed, he found numerous assignments at diplomatic missions abroad and in the Foreign Ministry and was first secretary at the embassy in Spain from 1966 to 1967 .

Hickman then took over the post of Consul General in Bilbao in 1967 and held it until 1969. He then served as Counselor and Deputy High Commissioner in Singapore between 1969 and 1971 and as Head of the Southwest Pacific Division in the Foreign Ministry from 1971 to 1974 . After further assignments, he was counselor at the embassy between 1974 and 1977 and finally chargé d' affaires at the embassy in Ireland. In 1977 he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his services . As the successor to Norman Ernest Cox , he became ambassador to Ecuador in 1977 and remained in this position until he was replaced by Adrian Buxton in 1981. Most recently, he took over the post of ambassador to Chile from John Heath in 1982 , which he held until he retired in 1987 held, whereupon Alan White took his place there. After retiring from the diplomatic service, he was director of 1988 in South America firm operating Anaconda Inc .

John Hickman married Jennifer Olive Love on April 4, 1956. From this marriage the daughter Catherine "Katie" Lucy Hickman , who works as a writer , and the two sons Matthew John Kyrle and Andrew Giles Lovell Hickman were born.
