John Dennis Hoesli (born March 8, 1919 , † March 1997 in Bracknell , United Kingdom ) was a British film architect , draftsman and set designer.

Live and act

Hoesli learned his cinematic craft as a late teenager just before the outbreak of World War II ; at the age of 19 he was involved as assistant production designer in Alfred Hitchcock's smugglers' drama Riff Pirates . After his military service, Hoesli resumed his film work as a draftsman in 1945, but returned to the film architect's assistant at the beginning of the 1950s. As an assistant to Wilfred Shingleton , for example, in 1951 he organized the rickety, eponymous steamboat "African Queen" in John Huston's comedy drama of the same name, largely reduced to two people . Towards the end of the 1950s, Hoesli was also allowed to work as a film architect for the first time.

In his career as a set designer, John Hoesli has been responsible for complex adventure materials such as Viking Raids and Storms over Jamaica , thrillers such as "Boots That Means Death" and The Needle, as well as the political drama The Wilby Conspiracy and the decoration material " The Prince and the Beggar " but not comedies. Hoesli is remembered primarily for his collaboration on Stanley Kubrick's science fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey , where he worked with Tony Masters and with two other colleagues to create the futuristic design of this two and a half hour large-scale production. In 1986 Hoesli withdrew from the film business.
