John Howell

John Howell (born August 14, 1914 in Hampstead , London , United Kingdom , † January 1993 in Devon ) was a British film architect .

Live and act

Howell received extensive artistic and cinematic training and began his career as chief architect for a commissioned production for the Royal Air Force at the age of 30 during the Second World War . Over the next three decades, John Howell designed the sets for a wide variety of entertainment productions that grew in stature over the course of the 1960s.

Howell designed the buildings into a series of selected, sometimes expensively produced, equipment-intensive and star-studded A-films, including Storm over Jamaica , Khartoum and Casino Royale , which were always very attractive, but were by no means always convincing in terms of content and staging competence. In his final years at work, John Howell also designed the architectural appearance of several films with Peter Sellers .
