John Hudson
John Hudson (* 1774 presumably in Middlesex , England ; † unknown) was a convict who was sentenced to prison at the age of 9. He arrived at the Australia Convict Colony at the age of 13 . This made him the youngest male convict ever to be deported to Australia.
Life
John, whose parents died young, sometimes worked as a chimney sweeper and was sentenced to seven years in prison on December 10, 1783. He had stolen a linen shirt, five silk socks and two aprons. The orphan had no lawyer in court .
On March 30, 1784, he was to be brought from Newgate Prison on the convict ship Mercury to the former British colony of New England in North America. This plan was rejected, however, and so it was transferred to the prison ship Dunkirk in Plymouth on May 24, 1784 . After spending three years there, he was deported from Plymouth to Australia on May 3, 1787. He left England on the Friendship , which was one of 11 ships in the First Fleet that arrived in Port Jackson on January 26, 1788 . On the First Fleet ships, John was one of 34 children.
About Hudson is also documented that he left Port Jackson on March 4, 1790 on the HMS Sirius in the direction of Norfolk Island . On February 15, 1791, he received 50 lashes there because he was picked up outside his accommodation after 9:00 p.m. Nothing is known about his further fate.
