La Vallée is a French film by Barbet Schroeder from 1972. The drama tells the story of a young woman who is on the search for paradise and who seems to find it among tribesmen in the forests of New Guinea .

Viviane is the wife of a French diplomat in Melbourne . She joins a group of researchers who set out on a journey of discovery to an unknown, cloud-shrouded valley in the forests of New Guinea . The aim of the research trip is to find and collect the feathers of an extremely rare exotic bird. On the way through the dense jungle they reach the top of Mount Giluwe , where they meet the Mapuga tribe, one of the most isolated peoples on earth. The Mapuga inspire the research group to explore their own humanity, free from their ideas of civilization and society. The original search for the bird evolves into a search for a paradise, which is marked on a map from 1969 with the note Hidden by a Cloud .
Trivia
The Pink Floyd group composed the soundtrack for the film. Due to a dispute with the production company, the group decided after production ended not to mention the film title La Vallée on their album and instead to use the title Obscured by Clouds , a quote from the film. As a consequence, the producers chose Obscured by Clouds as a subtitle to create a connection to the popular band.
