John Humphrey Noyes (born September 3, 1811 in Brattleboro , Vermont , † April 13, 1886 in Niagara Falls , Ontario ) was an American early socialist and founded the Oneida congregation in 1848 . This commune, also known as the “sect of perfectionists”, had been based on the following agreements since 1867: A civil marriage was refused. Sex was only possible if both partners gave their express consent. In order to produce “healthy”, “perfect” offspring, only such people were allowed to breed. Otherwise, contraceptives should be used. The male partner had to avoid ejaculation. Noyes is considered a pioneer of free love and the protagonist of Karezza .

At the age of 15 he was enrolled at Dartmouth College . He completed a law degree . At the age of 21 he turned to religion and studied theology a. a. at Yale University . In 1838 he married Harriet Holten. He was active as a preacher and publicist.
