John Hunt, Baron Hunt of Tanworth

John Joseph Benedict Hunt, Baron Hunt of Tanworth , GCB , MC (born October 23, 1919 in Minehead , † July 17, 2008 ) was a British politician and civil servant.

He attended Downside School and Magdalene College in Cambridge . In 1946 he entered the civil service and began his career in the Dominions Office . From 1948 to 1950 he was Second Secretary to the United Kingdom High Commission in Ceylon . He was Cabinet Secretary from 1973 to 1979 .

Hunt was the owner of the Military Cross (MC) . In 1968 he was accepted as a Companion (CB) in the Order of the Bath , in 1973 he was promoted to Knight Commander (KCB) in the same order and finally to Knight Grand Cross (GCB) in 1977 . On February 8, 1980, he was named a Life Peer , Baron Hunt of Tanworth , of Stratford-on-Avon in the County of Warwickshire . In the House of Lords he was a crossbencher before he was granted leave of absence .

Hunt was married to Magdalen Mary Lister Robinson, daughter of Roy Robinson, 1st Baron Robinson , since 1941 . After her death in 1971, he married the widowed Madeleine Frances († 2007), a sister of Cardinal Basil Hume , in 1973 . Hunt had two sons.
