John Iliffe

John Iliffe (born May 1, 1939 ) is a British historian.

Life

Iliffe studied from 1961–1963 at Makerere College in Kampala , Uganda . From 1965 to 1970 he was a lecturer and then in 1971 head of the history department at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania .

From 1971 to 1980 Iliffe was Deputy Director of History Research at the University of Cambridge . During this time, in 1978, he also conducted research at Bayero University in Kano , Nigeria . In 1982 he was a visiting professor of history at Chancellor College of the University of Malawi . He has been a member of the Academia Europaea since 1996 .

Iliffe is currently (2017) Professor of Modern African History at the University of Cambridge. He has been teaching and researching there at St. John's College since 1990 . He is known for his work on the colonial and post-colonial history of East Africa, but has also written extensive accounts of the history of the whole of Africa or of individual African states.
