John Johnson (basketball player, 1959)

John Johnson (born January 6, 1959 in Manchester ) is a former American basketball player who also has German citizenship. The 1.93-meter-tall winger was active in the basketball Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen and Steiner Bayreuth .

career

Johnson was born in Manchester, England, to a Puerto Rican father and a German mother. He played basketball at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1981 , in his senior year 1980/81 he scored an average of 14.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 basket assists in 30 missions. He was the second best thrower of the college team that season behind Mike McGee . In the 1981 NBA Draft , Johnson was taken 69th overall by the Boston Celtics in the third selection round.

In the seasons 81/82 and 82/83 Johnson played for the Crystal Palace Basketball Club in England, in 1983 he moved within the country to the Solent Stars . With the Stars, Johnson became English champions in his first year and was named Player of the Year. 1984/85 Johnson was initially also in the service of the Solent Stars, but switched to league rivals Kingston Kings during the season .

1985 Johnson went to the German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and won the German championship with the Rhinelanders in 1986, 1990 and 1991. In the 1991/92 season he was still active for Steiner Bayreuth, who hired him in November 1991, when at that time the start of the 1991/92 season had failed and was last in the table. Johnson scored a total of 3423 points during his Bundesliga time.

After his basketball career, Johnson worked as a representative for the Bayer Group in the Tampa Bay area ( Florida, USA ) until 1996 . From 1996 to 1998 he was a basketball coach at Berkeley Preparatory School in Florida and from 1998 to 2000 he was assistant coach for the team at Florida Southern College. Johnson then moved into the insurance and finance industries, ran a company that develops educational programs for students, and began teaching at Largo Middle School in the summer of 2007 as a physical education and history teacher.
