John Kelly (* unknown; † after 1938 ) was a Scottish football goalkeeper who played three games in the Scottish Cup for Celtic Glasgow .
Career
John Kelly made his debut for Celtic Glasgow in a 7-1 win in a friendly over Mitchell's St. George's on New Year's Eve 1888. On January 3, 1889, he was in goal at the game against the English team of the Corinthians , which was in front of the then record crowd was held by 21,000 spectators in Celtic Park . On January 12, 1889, he played his first competitive game for Celtic in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup . Celtic won the game against FC Dumbarton at Boghead Park 4-1. The club from Glasgow , founded a year earlier, reached the final for the first time. The final was played against Third Lanark on February 2, 1889 . At the time of the game, there was heavy snowfall in the final venue, Glasgow . After protests by both teams, the association decided to consider the final as a friendly. The repeat final on February 9, 1889, Lanark won 2-1. Kelly lost his place in goal for Celtic in May 1889 after a 2-5 defeat in the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup against FC Renton .
