John Leslie Jambor ( 1936 - January 18, 2008 ) was a Canadian geologist and mineralogist .

Live and act

Jambor graduated from the University of British Columbia with a bachelor's degree in geology and then a master's degree . From 1960 he worked for the Geological Survey of Canada in Ottawa. In 1966 he received his PhD from Carleton University .

From 1971 to 1975 Jambor was a scientific editor and from 1975 to 1977 co-editor of "The Canadian Mineralogist". For the "American Mineralogist" he worked from 1989 to 2007 as an editor for newly discovered minerals and also as a consultant editor from 1991 to 1999 for "Exploration & Mining Geology".

In 1993, Jambor returned to Vancouver , where he continued his work on environmental mineralogy as an adjunct professor at the University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia. He also became director of the petrological department at Leslie Research and Consulting.

In January 2008 Jambor died after 10 months of disease to cancer . He left behind his wife Lynne and son Jay.

Mineral descriptions

Jambor described numerous new minerals, with the analysis of mineral samples from the "Taylor" quarry near Huntingdon in Hastings County in the Canadian province of Ontario in 1967 with Guettardite , Launayit , Madocit , Playfairit , Sorbyite , Sterryite , Twinnit and Veenit eight new minerals discovered.
