Life

John Maeda was born in Seattle , Washington, in 1966 , where his father owned a tofu factory.

Maeda was originally a computer science student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where he was intrigued by the work of Paul Rand and Muriel Cooper . Cooper was the director of the Visible Language Workshop at MIT. He has taught at the MIT Media Lab since 1996 and was also Associate Director there in 2001. There he led the Physical Language Workshop together with Henry Holtzman . From 2004 to 2006 he took time out to obtain a Master of Business Administration . After completing his bachelor's and master's degrees at MIT, Maeda studied at the Institute of Art and Design at Tsukuba University in Japan to earn his PhD in design.

Career

As an artist, Maeda redefined the use of electronic media as a means of expression in his early works by combining computer programming with traditional artistic techniques, thus laying the foundation for the interactive moving graphics that are taken for granted on the web today. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Cartier Foundation in Paris.

In 2019 Maeda moved from Automattic, the company behind web applications such as WordPress, to Publicis Sapient . Most recently he was Global Head of Computational Design + Inclusion. He previously worked in the position of a design partner at Kleiner Perkins, where he advised start-ups to the business impact of design and continues to operate as a strategic advisor, as well as Design Advisory Board Chair for eBay, Inc . Further stations in his career took him to the MIT Media Laboratory and the Rhode Island School of Design as a professor , where he was the 16th President of the institution. Maeda is also on the supervisory boards of Sonos , the Smithsonian Design Museum and the Wieden + Kennedy agency and is the author of several books - including the bestseller “Laws of Simplicity”.

He was a professor at the MIT Media Lab for 12 years, promoting a community of designers and engineers called the Aesthetics + Computation Group, and then founded the Physical Language Workshop with Henry Holtzman. He resigned from MIT in 2008 to become President of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) when the global financial crisis hit 2007-2009.

Maeda received the Tribeca Film Festival Disruptor Award and the Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts & Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy Center for his work promoting STEAM education . Maeda resigned as president in late 2013 and joined eBay Inc. as chairman of its design advisory board and KPCB to advance design in Silicon Valley .

In 2014 and 2015 he was guest curator and host of PopTech: REBELLION and PopTech: HYBRID.

In 2015 he published his first Design In Tech Report to connect the world of finance with the world of design and technology. A second Design In Tech Report was published in 2016, and later a third Design In Tech Report was published in 2017.

As Global Chief Experience Officer at Publicis Sapient, he now supports corporate decision-makers in reinventing their business and their entire industry through creativity and innovation. Maeda is also part of the Publicis Group's creative executive collective. The entire creative competence of the holding company is bundled at this management level and structured in such a way that the entire range of creative disciplines is available to customers.
