Paul Rand

Paul Rand (born August 15, 1914 in New York , USA as Perutz Rosenbaum , † November 26, 1996 in Norwalk , Connecticut , USA) was a well-known American graphic designer , who was mainly famous for his company logos.

He received his education at the Pratt Institute (1929-1932), at the Parsons School of Design (1932-1933) and the Art Students League of New York (1933-1934).

From 1935 to 1941 he was the art director of Esquire and Apparel Arts magazines (later renamed GQ: Gentlemen's Quarterly ). 1956-1969 and again from 1974 he taught design at Yale University .

He has designed logos for companies like ABC , Cummins Engine , Enron , IBM , IDEO , NeXT and Westinghouse . The original logo of the company UPS , which was used from 1961 to 2003, also comes from him.

For IBM he not only designed the logo, which has been in use since 1972 , but also the well-known colorful variation Auge-Biene-M ( Eye-Bee-M ).
