John Mayall Plays John Mayall (Recorded Live at Klooks Kleek!) Is the first album by British blues musician John Mayall . It was recorded live in 1964 and was released on Decca Records in 1965 (in Mono , LK 4680); the CD was released in 2006.

Album history

On December 7, 1964 John Mayall and the gave Bluesbreakers in klooks kleek , an R & B -Club, of the Railway Hotel in London district of Hampstead had his domicile, a live concert. It is not so much the musical brilliance of the band that makes this album worth mentioning. Rather, its specialty lies in conveying the club atmosphere of the time, which was recorded extremely well. John Mayall played a large part in this, and with his refreshing comments made the audience an indispensable part of the guest performance.

In addition to John Mayall as singer, harpsichord, organ , 9-string guitar and harmonica , Roger Dean on guitar, John McVie on bass guitar , Hughie Flint on drums and Nigel Stanger on tenor and slide saxophone formed the band. Roger Dean can only be heard on this album as a bluesbreaker. He was replaced a short time later by Eric Clapton .

CD bonus track

The five bonus tracks are not additional material from the live recordings of the original LP, but studio recordings. The first two tracks were recorded in the spring of 1964 with Bernie Watson as guitarist and Martin Hart on drums. On the other three, the cast (with the exception of Nigel Stanger) is identical to that of the original live album.
