John McAllion

John McAllion (* 1948 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician and former member of the Labor Party . McAllion attended St Augustine's Secondary School and then studied at St Andrews University and Dundee College of Education before becoming a teacher. In 1984 he was elected to the Tayside Regional Council, which he chaired from 1986.

British House of Commons

In the late 1970s, McAllion joined the Labor Party. In the 1987 general election, he ran for the first time in elections at the national level. He won the direct mandate of the constituency of Dundee East before the SNP candidate Gordon Wilson and moved into the House of Commons for the first time . In the following general election in 1992 and 1997 , he defended his mandate.

Scottish Parliament

In the first Scottish parliamentary elections in 1999 McAllion ran in the constituency of Dundee East and won the direct mandate with a clear lead over the SNP candidate Shona Robison . In the parliamentary elections in 2003, he was finally defeated and left parliament. Due to political differences, McAllion left the Labor Party and joined the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP). For this he ran in the new elections to the British House of Commons in the constituency of Dunfermline and West Fife .
