Caspar Ratzenberger

Caspar Ratzenberger (* 1533 in Saalfeld ; † November 22, 1603 in Ortrand ) was a city ​​doctor in Naumburg and a botanist . He studied at the University of Wittenberg and created the Ratzenberger herbarium .

The herbarium , which consists of three books, is based on plants that Ratzenberger collected between 1555 and 1592 during his travels, which took him to France and Italy, among others. The dried and pressed plants were glued to paper pages that were bound to make books. The herbarium contains 700 named plants and was handed over in 1592 to the Landgrave of Hessen-Kassel interested in nature studies Wilhelm the Wise and his son Moritz the scholar , so that it came to Kassel , where it is exhibited today in the Ottoneum Natural History Museum.
