John Mercer Reid

John Mercer Reid PC (born February 8, 1937 in Fort Frances , Ontario ) is a former Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada .

Life

After attending school, Reid completed a degree and, following a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and a Master of Arts (MA), also acquired a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) . He then worked as a teacher .

His political career began in the House of Commons election on November 8, 1965 when he was first elected to the House of Commons as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the constituency of Kenora-Rainy River . He belonged to this until his electoral defeat in the general election on September 4, 1984 , where he belonged to the Liberal Labor Party between 1968 and 1972, before he was then again a member of the Liberal Party.

During his long membership in Parliament, Reid was first chairman of the Standing Subcommittee on Broadcasting, Film and Support for the Arts between September 1968 and September 1972. In December 1972 he became Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Privy Council and held this office until September 1975.

In October 1978 he became chairman of the Standing House of Commons Committee on procedures and organization and remained in this position until March 1979. At the same time he was from November 1978 to June 1979 Minister of State for relations between the federal government and the provinces and territories of Canada in which of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau led 20 Federal Cabinet .

After leaving the House of Commons, he worked first as a lecturer and then as a professor . Most recently Reid was from July 1998 to September 2006 Information Commissioner of the House of Commons and thus an independent ombudsman based on the Access to Information Act.
