John Middleton (Governor)
Sir John Middleton KBE , CMG (* 1870 , † 1954 ) was a governor of Gambia, among others, and represented King George V in the British colony of Gambia .
Middleton joined the Colonial Office in 1901 . He initially worked in southern Nigeria for six years before moving to Mauritius until 1920 . He was Governor of the Falkland Islands from 1920 to 1927 , then from March 10, 1927 to November 29, 1928 Governor of Gambia. From 1928 to 1932 he served as governor of the Dominion Newfoundland .
He was Governor of Newfoundland during a political crisis that was exacerbated by the Great Depression. In 1932 he was asked to check whether claims were true that the Prime Minister of Newfoundland, Sir Richard Squires , was involved in a corruption affair. Middleton could not produce any evidence; this led to a riot outside the government building on April 5, 1932 and Squire's government was ousted.
Middleton retired from public life and returned to Britain .
