John Moffet (politician)

John Moffet (born April 5, 1831 in County Antrim , United Kingdom , †  June 19, 1884 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . In 1869 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives for one month .

Career

In his youth, John Moffet and his parents came to Philadelphia from his home in Northern Ireland , where he attended public schools. After a subsequent medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania and his license as a doctor, he began to work in this profession from 1853. He also worked as a pharmacist. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party .

In the congressional elections of 1868 Moffet was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Leonard Myers on March 4, 1869 , whom he had defeated in the election. However, the latter filed an objection to the outcome of the election. When this was complied with, Moffet had to cede his mandate to Myers on April 9 of the same year.

After his brief tenure in the US House of Representatives, John Moffet resumed his previous activities as a doctor and pharmacist. He died in Philadelphia on June 19, 1884.
