Robert Adams Jr.

Robert Adams Jr. (born February 26, 1849 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  June 1, 1906 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1893 and 1906 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Adams attended the Doctor Fairies Physical Institute in Philadelphia and then studied until 1869 at the University of Pennsylvania there . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1872, he began to work in this profession. In the years 1871 to 1875 he was a member of the United States Geological Survey , which dealt with the results of expeditions in Yellowstone National Park . Between 1881 and 1895, Adams was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Militia. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania Senate from 1883 to 1886 . In the meantime, he completed his education at the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School until 1884 . Between July 20, 1889 and March 1, 1890, Adams was the American envoy to Brazil . He had to give up this office for health reasons.

After the death of the MP Charles O'Neill , Adams was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he took up his new mandate on December 19, 1893, when the by-election for the third seat of Pennsylvania was due. After six re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 1, 1906 . There he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. At times he acted as its chairman. During his time as a congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 took place .

Robert Adams got into financial difficulties in the last few years of his life after losses from stock market speculation. As the pressure grew, he shot himself on June 1, 1906 in his Washington apartment.
